Kuala Lumpur, May 25 (Inditop) Malaysian Indian-dominated People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has split with a federal minister, who was expelled earlier, being elected the ‘president’ by his supporters who removed the party’s long-time chief from the top post.
The party was “plunged into chaos” when T. Murugiah, deputy minister in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) was elected by about 1,760 supporters in what they claimed was an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) here Sunday, The Star newspaper said.
The members also passed a resolution to reinstate six other members who were sacked along with him and for a no-confidence vote against long-time party chief M. Kayveas. They also removed Kayveas from the president’s post with immediate effect.
“Murugiah was elected the party’s new president uncontested after the seat fell vacant,” EGM chairman Mohammmed Ali Ibrahim told media.
Founded in 1953, the People’s Progressive Party or Parti Progresif Penduduk Malaysia, is a multi-racial political party claiming to have a membership of over 500,000.
It is a constituent of the ruling alliance Barisan Nasional.
