Gaza/Ramallah, May 20 (IANS) The Islamist Hamas movement on Wednesday accused the Israeli police of executing a Palestinian car driver from east Jerusalem who ran over two Israelis and wounded them.
Sami Abu Zuhri, Hamas spokesman in Gaza, said in a statement that Hamas has accused the Israeli occupation for executing the young man, Omran Abu Idheim, in Jerusalem, Xinhua news agency reported.
“What happened was an example to the field execution the Israeli occupation practises against our people,” he said, adding that “therefore, we call on the world’s institutions to bear its responsibility towards the Israeli crimes”.
Earlier on Wednesday, an Israeli police spokeswoman said in a press statement that the Israeli police killed a Palestinian man who drove his car over two Israelis in east Jerusalem and wounded them.
“The attack occurred on a crossroad at al-Tur neighbourhood in east Jerusalem and wounded two policemen,” said the spokeswoman’s statement.
She said that after the young man ran over the two policemen, another Israeli police personnel opened fire at the driver and critically wounded him — the driver died later.
However, Abu Zuhri and other activists said it was an accident and the policemen killed the Palestinian young man, who was identified as Omran Abu Idheim, in cold blood.
Over the past several months, there had been a series of attacks by cars carried out by Palestinian drivers, mainly in the eastern part of Jerusalem. Several Israelis were either killed or injured in these attacks.
