Manchester, Sep 9 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Manchester United defender Phil Jones has been ruled out for up to eight weeks after suffering a knee injury in training, the team said.
England international Jones will miss domestic fixtures against Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, as well as Manchester United’s game against Galatasaray and CFR Cluj in the Champions League, and he is doubtful for the game against Braga Oct 23.
“Phil Jones has had surgery on a knee meniscus tear sustained in training that will require six to eight weeks of rehabilitation,” the team website said Saturday.
Jones, 20, has made no appearances this season as he was suffering from a back injury he sustained in a pre-season tour.
Jones, who has five caps, missed England’s World Cup qualifier against Moldova Friday, which England won 5-0, and will now miss matches against Ukraine Tuesday, as well as San Marino and Poland next month.
United defender Chris Smalling is currently ruled out with a broken metatarsal, while Jonny Evans and Rio Ferdinand have recently returned from their own injuries.
Jones, who can also play in the midfield, joined Manchester United from Blackburn Rovers last year on a five-year deal and has since made 29 appearances for the team, scoring once.
