Stockholm, Oct 10 (IANS) Robert J. Lefkowitz and Brian K. Kobilka, both from universities in the US, won the 2012 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, announced Staffan Normark, permanent secretary of Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Wednesday.
They got the award “for studies of G-protein-coupled receptors”, Xinhua quoted Normark as saying.
This was the third of this year’s crop of Nobel prizes. All but one of the prizes were established by the 19th century dynamite millionaire Alfred Nobel. The economics award was created by Sweden’s central bank in 1968.
The prizes have been awarded since 1901. Each prize consists of a medal, a personal diploma and a cash award. This years’s cash award is 8 million Swedish kronor (about 1 million US dollars).
