Kuala Lumpur, Dec 21 (IANS) The Malaysian daily The New Straits Times has earned a ‘thank you’ from an ethnic Indian woman after it collected RM 30,000 ($9,537) from the public for treatment of her ailing child.
C. Vason Nanda, 22 months old, has battled complex heart problems since birth. Two hours after he was born at Kuala Lumpur Hospital, he had severe breathing difficulties.
Vason also suffers from Down’s Syndrome.
Mother S. Vijaya Letchumi had no one to turn to after her husband, suffering from depression, walked out on the family.
The 35-year-old housewife says her younger sister has been supporting her.
The child is recovering and does not need medication, doctors said.
Vijaya said without the help of New Straits Times whose readers raised the RM 30,000 needed for the corrective surgery, her son would not have survived.
