London, July 1 (IANS) Hollywood actress Meryl Streep is reportedly in talks to play Britain’s first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, in a new biopic.
Streep will star alongside actor Jim Broadbent as Thatcher’s husband Denis in the film titled ‘Thatcher’. The film is set in the 17 days running up to Argentina’s invasion of the Falkland Islands April 2, 1982.
The two-and-a-half-month conflict that followed, after Thatcher dispatched a military task force to successfully retake the Falklands, is now regarded as a turning point in her 11-year premiership. Thatcher’s popularity had slumped before the conflict during the early 1980s recession, but she then led the Conservatives to landslide election victories in 1983 and 1987, reports guardian.co.uk.
The BBC Films’ biopic would reunite Streep with ‘Mamma Mia!’ director Phyllida Lloyd.
