Beijing, Dec 31 (IANS) Anti-corruption officials in Chinese metropolitan city Shanghai have investigated more than 300 cases of corruption this year involving at least 377 government staff.
The city discipline inspection watchdog said as many as 726 officials received punishments in 2011 for administrative offences, the Shanghai Daily reported.
These included officials punished over a high-rise inferno in Jing’an district, in which 58 people died and 71 were injured, and a metro train collision, in which more than 290 passengers were injured.
Officials, however, said that a survey shows public confidence in government efforts to crack down on corruption has grown over the past five years.
Around 77 percent of local people interviewed said they were satisfied with the results of the anti-corruption investigations, compared to 68 percent when asked the same question in 2006.
