Seoul, Aug 3 (DPA) North Korea Tuesday threatened a counterattack in response to South Korean naval exercises scheduled for later this week in the Yellow Sea, media reports said.
The command responsible for the North’s western maritime border made the threat of a ‘strong physical counterattack’ in a statement carried by the state-run North Korean media.
South Korea is planning the naval exercises in reaction to the sinking of a South Korean warship in March in which 46 sailors died. South Korea blames the North for torpedoing it, an accusation the Stalinist state has denied.
The manoeuvres are due to last from Thursday until Monday.
South Korea and the United States held joint naval manoeuvres last week in the Sea of Japan.
North Korea also threatened to carry out revenge attacks in response to those exercises.
