Islamabad, May 27 (IANS) Pakistan on Wednesday strongly condemned Tuesday’s terrorist attack in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province that left 26 soldiers dead.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack on an army base in Nawzad district of Helmand early on Tuesday.
Afghan officials said a group of heavily-armed Taliban insurgents launched the attack on police and military posts.
“Pakistan strongly condemns the terrorist attack that took place on May 25 (sic) in Nawzad district in Helmand province resulting in the deaths of 26 soldiers. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go to the families of the deceased,” the foreign Ministry said.
“Such acts are unjustifiable and cannot be tolerated,” Xinhua news agency quoted a foreign ministry statement as saying.
It said terrorism was the common enemy of Pakistan and Afghanistan and “comprehensive and coordinated measures are imperative to root out this menace from our region”.
“Pakistan reiterates its condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” the statement said.
Taliban have stepped up attacks in Afghanistan after they started their so-called “spring offensive” in late April.
