New Delhi, May 26 (IANS) National grasscourt champion Ankita Raina overcame stiff resistance from Pakistan’s Ushna Suhail 7-6, 6-4 and stormed into the pre-quarterfinals of the Asian Junior Tennis Championships at the DLTA complex here Wednesday.
Ankita, seeded 14th, is now up against last week’s ITF junior tournament winner and fourth-seeded Chinese Zi Yang who dispatched Japan’s Nao Hibino 6-2, 6-3.
Tenth-seeded Indian wildcard Kyra Shroff was hardly tested by compatriot Anushka Bhargava as she sailed into the last 16 with a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win. Kyra next plays fifth-seed Chinese Lin Zhu, who was stretched to three sets by India’s Sharmada Balu before winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
Seventh-seeded Rishika Sunkara, Andya Naik, Natasha Palha and Sharon Sanchana Paul were the other girls to advance to the pre-quarterfinals.
In the boys section, India’s fourth-seeded Sai Kartik Nakireddi breezed into the pre-quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Borodkin. Nakireddi next faces 15th-seeded Chi-Shan Jao of Chinese Taipei who blanked India’s Tarun Nath Surath 6-0, 6-0.
Fifth-seeded Ronit Singh Bisht was leading 6-2, 3-0 when his opponent Sai Saran Reddy Byredddy conceded the match due to dehydration. Bisht next plays compatriot Shahbaaz Khan who fought his way to a 7-6(6), 6-4 win over Uzek Artem Tarasov.
Sixth-seeded Vaidik Munshaw, Sumeet Shinde, Mansingh Athare, Saurabh Singh, Rakshay Thakkar, Siddharth Rawat, Rishabdev Raman and Shahbaaz Khan were the other Indians to progress to the pre-quarters.
