Berlin, May 14 (IANS) German weekly Der Spiegel said on Thursday that Spanish football club Real Madrid was knocked out of the Champions League semi-finals by a “friendly fire” referring to the goal scored by their former player Alvaro Morata, now playing for Italian champions Juventus.
Madrid drew 1-1 against Italian Juventus in the second leg on Wednesday at home while losing the first leg 1-2 away at Turin, Italy.
The news magazine said Real Madrid made 23 shots on goal, but only managed to score once, while the Italians employed a more effective game, scoring a surprise goal and advancing to the final, reports Efe.
Bild newspaper said Morata did not really look happy on Wednesday despite scoring the all-important goal.
Munich-based newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung said Real Madrid failed on Wednesday and that the Italians were smarter, noting Madrid’s larger failure to realise its dream of making history by winning the Champions League twice consecutively.
Juventus will face Spanish side FC Barcelona in this year’s Champions League final in Berlin on June 6.
