Taipei, July 27 (DPA) A Taiwan company has won a contract to design the world’s largest aquarium in Russia’s Vladivostok city, the company said Tuesday.

The Huangs Green Country Industrial Co Ltd won the bid on the project that is part of Vladivostok’s preparation for hosting the 2012 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, it said.

‘The indoor area of the aquarium will occupy 20,000 square metres. It will be the world’s largest aquarium in terms of total water storage,’ manager Kenny Chen said.

Russia hopes that hosting the summit of 21 Pacific Rim nations can help spur economic development of its eastern region and boost ties with APEC members.

It has budgeted 100 billion roubles ($4 billion) to prepare for it, including upgrading the Vladivostok international airport, building a ballet theatre, modern hotels, bridge and road projects.
