Paris, July 16 (DPA) International police agency Interpol said Friday that more than 5,000 people were arrested in Asia for illegal gambling in an operation run during the World Cup.
The Interpol-coordinated operation specifically targeted illegal football gambling ‘linked to organised crime gangs’, the agency said. Police seized more than $10 million dollars in the action.
Officers in China, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand participated in the crackdown, and raided ‘nearly 800 illegal gambling dens which handled more than $155 million worth of bets’, Interpol said.
Police also seized cars, bank cards, computers and mobile phones in the operation, which ran from June 11 to July 11.
