Bangalore, Oct 27 (Inditop.com) Two Tibetans were detained by police when they tried to enter the venue of the trilateral meeting among foreign ministers of Russia, India and China (RIC) here Tuesday.
The two were protesting the presence of Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi in Bangalore.
The RIC meeting, followed by bilateral talks between India’s External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and Yang, took place at a five-star hotel downtown.
The hotel was guarded by around 300 policemen.
Bangalore police faced severe embarrassment in April 2005 when a Tibetan protestor breached security at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit. The protester climbed on top of a tower and waved a ‘Free Tibet’ banner.
This time city police commissioner Shankar Bidari had warned the Tibetans against any attempt to breach security at the venue of the meetings.
A small group of Tibetans, however, staged a demonstration at Ejipura, about 10 km from the hotel, on Monday against Yang’s visit.
Karnataka has the largest Tibetan refugee population in the country. Around 40,000 of the 120,000 Tibetan refugees in India live in the state.
