Winnipeg (IANS), June 13 (IANS) The United States and Sweden fought a scoreless draw in their Group D match at the Women’s World Cup.
Sweden were unlucky not to have a penalty in the 21st minute when American player Sydney Leroux appeared to knock a shot on goal away with her elbow on Friday, reports Xinhua.
The US side absorbed Sweden’s pressure well and their goalkeeper Hope Solo was seldom threatened. Her only real save in the first half came on a Sofia Jakobsson corner kick that Solo parried away.
The Americans regained some momentum in the final ten minutes of the first half and managed to create several good chances, but could not convert them into goals.
Sweden came close in the 74th minute, as Jakobsson’s shot following a corner kick was headed away off the crossbar by US defender Meghan Klingenberg.
The United States, who beat Australia 3-1 in the first half, are now well-positioned to qualify for the knockout stage, while Sweden are left in danger with only two draws from as many games.
